Giovanni Asnicar

Born: Asiago, Province of Vicenza, Veneto, Italy
Died: Asiago, Veneto, Italy
Occupation: Alpine farmer and cheesemaker

Biography

Giovanni Asnicar lived his entire life on the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni in the Venetian Prealps. He inherited a small malga (mountain dairy) from his father and continued the family tradition of producing Asiago cheese.

Historical Context

Giovanni's lifetime spanned the unification of Italy, the catastrophic Battle of Asiago in 1916 — which forced the entire population of the plateau to evacuate — and the post-war rebuilding of the Sette Comuni. The Asnicar surname is documented in Asiago parish registers as early as the 17th century, with roots in the Cimbrian-speaking communities of the region.
