Maria Asnicar (Rossi)

Born: Gallio, Veneto, Italy
Died: Asiago, Veneto, Italy
Occupation: Weaver and homemaker

Biography

Maria Rossi married Giovanni Asnicar in 1899 and raised five children through the upheavals of two world wars. She was known in the village for her skill at the loom and for sheltering displaced neighbors during the 1916 evacuation.

Historical Context

The 1916 evacuation of the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni displaced over 60,000 people; women like Maria carried the burden of holding families together in temporary settlements across the Veneto and Lombardy. The Rossi family of Gallio appears in Napoleonic-era civil registers from 1810.
